Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu dies at 72
Onyeka Onwenu, the Nigerian singer, actress, and activist known as the "Elegant Stallion," has passed away at 72. The star died shortly after performing at a private party in Lagos.
Born in Obosi, Anambra, in January 1952, to a politician father and a singer mother, Onwenu’s early life was shaped by music and social consciousness. She completed her education in the US before returning to Nigeria to launch a successful pop career while also working as a broadcaster.
She recorded a groundbreaking duet with King Sunny Adé and was an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and social issues. Her bold and confident demeanor was often misunderstood, but those who knew her, like historian Ed Keazor, saw her as a dedicated and driven individual.
In her later years, Onwenu turned to gospel music and politics, serving as the head of the National Centre for Women Development. She continued to make significant contributions to Nigerian arts and culture, starring in films like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lionheart.
Personal life
Despite her public persona, Onwenu kept her personal life private. She raised two sons on her own after leaving a difficult marriage with her ex-husband, a Yoruba Muslim whose last name is Ogunlende. Her determination and resilience were evident in moments like her hunger strike protest against the Nigerian Television Authority in 2000.
Cause of death
Onyeka Onwenu suddenly fell ill after completing a performance at a private party on the night of July 30, 2024, in Lagos. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she died hours later from a heart attack, as reported by local sources.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Onwenu, stating that she “lives on in her immortal masterpieces.”
Funeral and burial
The singer’s funeral service was held between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos.
Onwenu was laid to rest at the Ebony Vaults and GardensIkoyi Cemetery, Lagos, Nigeria, in accordance to her wishes.
