Character actor known for his large frame and deep voice, he often played villains and soldiers. In 1966, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his dual roles as Kid Shelleen and Tim Strawn in the film Cat Ballou.
His first cousin four times removed is Confederate General Robert E. Lee. He dated Michelle Triola from 1965 to 1970 and he had four children.
How did Lee Marvin die?
Marvin was a heavy smoker and drinker and suffered health problems by the end of his life.
The actor was hospitalized for more than two weeks in December 1986 because of a condition related to coccidioidomycosis. He went into respiratory distress and was given steroids to help with his breathing. But as a result, he had major intestinal ruptures and underwent a colectomy.
He passed away from a heart attack on August 29, 1987, at 63.
