Biography - A Short Wiki
British pop star who recorded “Son of a Preacher Man” in 1968 and other hits like “I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself.”
Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O’Brien, but she received the nickname “Dusty” from an early age for playing football with boys in the street and was described as a tomboy.
She lived in a domestic partnership with fellow singer Norma Tanega from mid-1966 to the early 1970s and then began a relationship with US photojournalist Faye Harris from late 1972 until 1978.
Cause of death
In January 1994, Springfield fell ill while recording her album “A Very Fine Love” in Nashville, Tennessee. After returning to England a few months later, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent months of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and the cancer went into remission.
In 1995, seemingly in good health, Springfield began promoting the album, which was released that year. However, by mid-1996, the cancer had returned. Despite aggressive treatments, Springfield passed away on March 2, 1999, at the age of 59, in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
Funeral
Hundreds of fans found their way to the funeral service held at Anglican St Mary the Virgin church in Henley-on-Thames, including celebrities like Elvis Costello, Lulu, and the Pet Shop Boys. A marker was placed in the church graveyard in her memory.
Burial
Springfield was cremated according to her wishes. Some of her ashes were buried in Henley, while her brother, Tom Springfield, scattered the rest at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
