The couple met on a blind date and would go on to be married for close to sixty years, spending most of their lives in the Washington, D.C., area. Together they raised three children.

Alma Powell died on Monday, July 28, 2024, in Alexandria, Virginia. On a Facebook post, the Powell family announced that she passed away following a brief illness, though the exact cause of death has not been made public.
