He was born into a Jewish family in Chicago, Illinois, inheriting his portly physique from his father.
How did Allan Sherman die?
Sherman’s health worsened rapidly during his final years due to alcoholism and weight gain. Later he would develop diabetes and an ongoing fight with lung disease. To make matters worse, his wife Dee filed for divorce in 1966, taking the kids (son and daughter) with her.
For some time, Sherman received unemployment benefits to get by. He moved into Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital to lose weight.
Tragically he passed away on November 20, 1973, at his home in West Hollywood. He reached the age of 48 but would have turned 49 had he lived ten days longer.
