Legendary host of the TV variety show The Toast of the Town, also known as The Ed Sullivan Show, from 1955 to 1971.
He got married to Sylvia Weinstein on April 28, 1930, and they had one child together.
Death
In September 1974, Sullivan was diagnosed with an advanced stage of esophageal cancer. His family chose to keep the diagnosis a secret as the doctor only gave him very little time to live. Sullivan thought his ailment was due to his long-standing battle with gastric ulcers, an uphill battle since he was a lifelong smoker.
He was heartbroken by the sudden cancellation of his show and devastated by Sylvia’s death the year before. Sullivan died on October 13, 1974, at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, at 73.
Funeral
His funeral was attended by 2,000 people at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, on a cold, rainy day.
Burial
Sullivan is interred in a crypt at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York.
Tribute
Sullivan was honored after his death by receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6101 Hollywood Boulevard. In 1985 he was welcomed to the Television Academy Hall of Fame.
